While medical cannabis would be unaffected, adult-use and recreational cannabis in Massachusetts will be made illegal if Question 8 passes this November.
Question 8, officially titled “Prohibit Retail Sale of Adult Recreational Use Marijuana,” would roll back major parts of Massachusetts’ adult-use cannabis laws.
At Massachusetts Alternative Care (MAC), cannabis is more than the products on our shelves. This industry supports thousands of workers, local businesses and communities across Massachusetts. That’s why we want our Amherst and Chicopee customers to understand what’s at stake before heading to the polls.
What Is Massachusetts Question 8?
Question 8 is a statewide ballot initiative that Massachusetts voters will decide on November 3, 2026. The proposal seeks to repeal key portions of the laws that created Massachusetts’ regulated adult-use cannabis industry.
Massachusetts voters originally approved recreational cannabis legalization through Question 4 in 2016. The state’s first licensed adult-use cannabis retailers opened in November 2018.
Fast forward to today and our state now regulated system covering cannabis cultivation, manufacturing, testing and retail sales. In other words, the cannabis industry has created not only job opportunities for so many MA residents over the years, but also a thriving and welcoming community.
Question 8 asks voters to significantly roll that system back.
What Happens if Question 8 Passes?
If Question 8 passes with a majority Yes vote, Massachusetts would eliminate the state’s licensed recreational cannabis retail and commercial production system. Adults would also lose the existing right to legally grow recreational cannabis at home.
The proposal would preserve limited legal possession and transfer of cannabis for adults 21 and older. Massachusetts’ regulated medical cannabis program would also remain in place.
The biggest change would be access.
Adults would no longer have the recreational dispensary system that currently allows consumers to purchase regulated and tested cannabis products from licensed businesses.
What Does Voting No on Question 8 Mean?
A No vote means keeping Massachusetts’ existing adult-use cannabis system in place.
For MAC customers, that means protecting the legal framework that allows recreational dispensaries like ours to continue serving adults 21 and older.
If you want to keep legal recreational cannabis retail in Massachusetts, vote No on Question 8.
More Than Just Cannabis
The Massachusetts cannabis repeal doesn’t only affect people who consume cannabis. It affects the people who have built their livelihoods around a legal Massachusetts industry.
Cannabis businesses employ people in retail, cultivation, manufacturing, testing, delivery, compliance, security, marketing and countless other roles. As of February 2024, Massachusetts had 367 licensed cannabis industry employers providing jobs to more than 22,000 workers across the Commonwealth.
The regulated adult-use industry has also grown into a significant part of the Massachusetts economy. In February 2026, the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission announced that adult-use cannabis businesses had surpassed $9 billion in gross sales since recreational sales began in 2018.
Behind those numbers are real people.
They’re the budtenders helping customers find products. They’re cultivators, production workers, managers and compliance teams. They’re local vendors and businesses that work alongside dispensaries. They’re people building careers in an industry Massachusetts voters chose to legalize a decade ago.
For us at MAC, that’s an important part of this conversation.
When Do Massachusetts Residents Vote on Question 8?
The Massachusetts State Election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
The voter registration deadline for the election is October 24, and early voting is scheduled for October 17 through October 30.

How to Register to Vote in Massachusetts
Want to make your voice heard on Question 8? First, make sure you’re registered to vote.
Massachusetts residents can register to vote online, by mail or in person. You can also use the state’s voter registration system to update your address or other registration information.
To register to vote in Massachusetts, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be a Massachusetts resident
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day
- Not currently be incarcerated for a felony conviction
For the November 3, 2026 State Election, the voter registration deadline is October 24, 2026. Early voting runs from October 17 through October 30.
