The academic calendar winds down, the trails dry out, the farmers’ markets start back up, and the Pioneer Valley settles into the kind of relaxed, open-ended weekend pace that long holiday weekends were made for. MAC at 55 University Dr is a family-owned, Massachusetts-local dispensary right in the middle of it…a convenient stop before whatever your weekend looks like!
Memorial Day honors the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country, and Amherst observes it with the community presence the holiday calls for. The Amherst Town Common, the historic green space at the center of downtown, is the natural gathering point for civic events and neighborhood activity throughout the weekend. West Cemetery on Triangle Street, one of Amherst’s oldest burial grounds, is a site where memorial observances have historically taken place.
The Pioneer Valley rewards a long weekend with a real lineup of places worth your time:
Mount Holyoke Range State Park is the standout outdoor option. The Metacomet-Monadnock Trail along the ridgeline gives you views across the valley that are genuinely worth the climb.
Amherst College Wildlife Sanctuary is the quieter alternative. With about 500 acres of mixed fields, wetlands, and woods, it’s home to diverse wildlife. Interactive tours are available to follow along as you walk.
Downtown Amherst on Main Street and Pleasant Street is walkable and worth a few hours. Independent bookstores, coffee shops, and local restaurants fill the corridor. The Emily Dickinson Museum at 280 Main Street (her homestead and the adjacent Evergreens) is open for tours and draws visitors from across New England.
Northampton college town rounds out the weekend nicely. The pedestrian-friendly stretch of Main Street has arts venues, independent shops, and restaurant options that hold up on a holiday weekend.
